Pralhad Keshav Atre was Maharashtra’s most celebrated literary author, poet, politician and speaker. He is well known for his immaculate comic gags in his speeches. He was also called as ‘Aacharya Atre’. Most of his literary work is famous and loved by mass. But this book “Mohityancha Shap” is not known by many. As this book he wrote when he was as young as 15 years. Actually this book is translation or rather a transformation of book called “The Hound of Baskervilles” written by ‘Arthur Conan Doyle’. It is not a mere translation but a transformation because Atre did not translate it word by word. He actually transformed the characters, situations, places of England which referred in the book into the characters, situations and places of Maharshtra, India. So it was easier to understand the novel written by Arthur Doyle for targeted readers in Maharashtra.
Book is about a murder mystery solved by a detective. Story starts when a death happens in the ‘Mohite’ family which was said to be because of great curse on Mohite Family. This curse already claimed many victims over the generations. But after latest victim of the curse, friends of the Mohite family decide to hire a detective for the safety of latest heir of the family. So in the end after lot of drama detective find out the mystery behind the curse. Not only he saves the life of his client but also find out real culprit behind the murder.
Book is not the greatest work of Aacharya Atre. This book actually published in a magazine periodically. Later ‘Parchure Prakashan’ published it in a book. If I have to rate this book I will give it 4 out of 10.
